Connect once, with your own list choices
Use Task Mafia’s installed plugin or the custom MCP control in your Codex client when available. Reuse an existing Task Mafia connection rather than creating a similarly named second connection.
For the Codex CLI, add the remote HTTP endpoint and complete its OAuth browser sign-in. OpenAI documents shared MCP configuration for its CLI and IDE extension; check the active client’s settings rather than assuming another device or host inherited them.
codex mcp add task_mafia --url https://taskmafia.com/mcp
codex mcp login task_mafia
codex mcp listCheck the connection, then choose the work
Ask for get_connection_status and list_projects. The first reports server and connection capabilities; the second shows only the lists you selected. A successful sign-in alone does not prove that a particular tool is loaded in this conversation.
Try a read-only request first: “Which Task Mafia lists can you access?” Then ask for a real action, such as “Add cucumber and lettuce to my shopping list.” Choose or share that list if it is missing. Task Mafia adds shopping items to the selected shopping list.
You can change selected lists or disconnect an agent in Task Mafia’s Your agents settings. Changing list access is your decision. A newly created list is not automatically shared with every connection.
Copy a setup prompt for your agent
Paste this into the client you want to connect. It asks for a capability check and the normal sign-in flow; it does not sign in, install software or grant access by itself.
The prompt does not sign in or grant access by itself.
A connection and a worker do different jobs
A normal conversation can use the tools its host exposes while you are there. Background pickup also needs a host with an actual schedule, private durable state and working check-ins. Task Mafia coordinates that work; it runs no AI model or external job.
Enable work only for the lists and connection you intend to use. Explicitly delegate a task, answer the agent’s private question when needed, and review its result in the original workspace. Only a person completes the task. A setup check is not proof of an unattended scheduled run.
Set up scheduled work deliberately
If you want recurring checks, ask your actual Codex host to configure a supported schedule. The Task Mafia server does not create it. The host must report what it can really do, keep encrypted private checkpoints and renew active work at least every five minutes.
A 15-minute discovery check is a way to find work; it is not an active execution heartbeat. After an interrupted run, restore the original checkpoint. Missing state or uncertain external effects require recovery, not a fresh run that repeats the action.
A clear next step.
Keep the lists you want private, connect the assistant you want to use, and check what it can actually do before giving it work.
